More Than Just a Game

As game days approach, I always find time to invite someone to watch the Bears.  More often than not, the person responds, “no thanks, it is just a game.”

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.  In MY opinion, basketball is much more than just a game.  Any sport, for that matter, is much more than just a game.

My family’s life revolves around sports, but mostly basketball.  My husband grew up playing football, baseball, basketball, and now coaches college basketball.  I played soccer, then, cheered in college.  Needless to say, we are sports.  Tigh is the sports one – I just like to watch it all fall into place.

As I sit here typing this, I try to imagine our lives without basketball – it is hard!  What would we talk about?  What kind of books would we Tigh read?  What would we watch on television?  What would we do with our weekends?  More importantly, who would we be?

Our lives do not revolve around just a game.  Basketball means so much more for us, the other coaches, and the players.  Tigh’s career.  Lessons of defending what is yours.  Working towards a goal (pun not intended).  Teamwork.  Family.  Love.

Basketball brought my family together.

So, next time you’re at a sporting event take time to look past the rivalry and the competition.  Basketball is much more to these players and coaches than just a game – it’s their lives.
